- If you have baseboard or radiators along your walls that get warm, then you have a boiler. Typically you will notice copper colored or black steel tubing in your basement when you have a system like this. If you have an oil tank somewhere in or outside the house, chances are you have an oil boiler. If you have a gas meter along side your house, chances are you have a gas boiler
- If you have registers that blow air and have noticed ducts in the house, then chances are you have a furnace. If you have an oil tank somewhere in or outside the house, chances are you have an oil furnace. If you have a gas meter along side your house, chances are you have a gas furnace.
- If you have been told you have “electric heat”, and notice your outdoor AC unit runs in the summer AND the winter, chances are you have a heat pump with electric back-up. Another indication of having a heat pump is having an “emergency heat” option on your thermostat.
- If you have a furnace AND noticed that your outdoor AC unit runs in the winter, chances are you have a heat pump with fossil fuel back-up. Your furnace could be oil or gas. If you have an oil tank somewhere in or outside the house, chances are you have an oil furnace for back-up heat. If you have a gas meter along side your house, chances are you have a gas furnace for back-up heat. Another indication of having a heat pump is having an “emergency heat” option on your thermostat.
